Street Art of Santa Maria: Beautiful Gallery of Murals

Santa Maria has gained a reputation for its vibrant street art. In recent years, local artists have turned plain walls into public galleries. Many murals show scenes from daily life in Cape Verde. You’ll see portraits, fishing scenes, music, and traditional dances.

Thanks to Arte’d Zona and many local artists, the streets of Santa Maria became a stunningly colourful gallery of artworks. From realistic portraits and animals to scenes from the island’s life and traditions, and abstract shape compositions, we can admire works painted by many young and older hands. On almost every street, the walls of buildings emanate a vibrant, positive energy.

Where to Find the Murals

Most of the murals are in central Santa Maria. Start near the Mercado Municipal. From there, walk along Rua 15 de Agosto and the surrounding streets. You’ll see art on the walls of houses, shops, and small businesses.

Some of the most notable works are located outside the town centre. In Espargos, for example, you can see murals by artist Adi Neves. His work often focuses on Cape Verdean women and everyday scenes. You can also find his paintings along the road from the airport to the town.

Artists and Themes

Local painters make the street art. Some are part of a group called Arte d’Zona. Their goal is to show Cape Verdean life through art. Many murals feature cultural symbols, such as fish, musical instruments, and dance motifs. Others are portraits of local people.

There’s a mural that some say shows the singer Lucibela, who was born on São Nicolau but lived and worked in Santa Maria. Other paintings depict families, workers, and musicians.

Tips for Visitors

• Go in the morning for better light for photos.
• Some artworks are in side streets, so take your time and look around.
